Design For Hydrogen Workshop Offered

The Design for Hydrogen workshop is a four-hour seminar for technical professionals. It is specifically designed for those who:
  • Desire to gain an understanding of common technical issues involved in the design of hydrogen energy systems,
  • Seek an overview of hydrogen energy systems from a technical perspective, or
  • Intend to incorporate elements of hydrogen systems in their professional practice and want to know where to begin.

The Chewonki Renewable Hydrogen Project is a demonstration project that will help bring Maine and the world closer to a healthy, sustainable environment by:

  • Accelerating the deployment of renewable energy systems using hydrogen generators, storage and fuel cells;
  • Benefitting educational, research, governmental and business interests and stimulate hydrogen technology business development in Maine; and
  • Developing and enhancing relationships among renewable energy interests, educational and research organizations, industry organizations, code enforcement officials, and renewable energy designers and contractors who would specify, install and maintain these systems.

The project consists of three major programs:

  • The design, installation and operation of a hydrogen energy system fueled by renewable energy. This system will provide four days backup power for critical activities at Chewonki’s Center for Environmental Education.
  • An extensive public outreach program that includes on-site displays, the expansion of Chewonki’s existing Sustainable Energy Education Tour and several brochures and workshop outlines to introduce general audiences to hydrogen energy systems.
  • A technical and business support program for Maine’s renewable energy industry to embrace hydrogen technologies. This program includes the collaboration and experience gained by the partners in completing the project; the development of a “Design for Hydrogen” brochure and workshop for design, engineering and construction professionals; and the preparation of a proposal for a conference aimed at expanding Maine’s renewable energy economy by gathering venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and R&D principals.

The Chewonki Foundation (www.chewonki.org), a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental education foundation, was founded in 1962. Chewonki is “dedicated to helping people grow individually and in community with others by providing educational experiences that foster an understanding and appreciation of the natural world and that emphasize the power of focused, collective effort.” Chewonki is a recognized leader in Global Warming and Sustainable Energy Education. Its campus is richly endowed with examples of current sustainable energy technology that are used to demonstrate and teach the possibilities of alternative methods of meeting our energy needs without degrading our planet. These include the use of photovoltaics for producing solar electricity, the utilization of solar water heating, the use of passive solar design for space heating and day lighting, and the production and utilization of biofuels for transportation and space heating. Its educational facilities sponsor environmental lectures and workshops, and an annual Renewable Energy fair in their Center for Environmental Education.

The Hydrogen Energy Center, based in Portland, Maine, is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization working toward a sustainable energy economy based on renewable hydrogen through public education, advocacy, technology demonstration and job creation.

The Chewonki Renewable Hydrogen Project involves a broad range of people, organizations and businesses across multiple sectors and disciplines. The project’s partners include architects, industrial and residential contractors, communications experts, engineers, energy contractors, business incubators, renewable energy product manufacturers, governmental code and safety officials, educational institutions and policy organizations. Each of these project partners has a defined role in the project and will help ensure the overall project’s success.
